| Research Abstract |
The purposes of this research program was to develop new and highly effective coal conversion processes through cooperations of Japanese and Canadian researchers. Through this program we were also expecting to build more intimate and reliable cooperative relationships between Japan and Canada especially in the field of science and technology.
This year was the final year of 4-year program. Then 10 researchers including 4 industry people visited Canada from Sep. 23 to Oct. 3. The main purpose of this visit was to attend the "Japan-Canada Coal Symposium" which was held on Sep. 23-25 at the University of British Columbia. In this symposium 23 papers, 9 of which were from Japanese side, were presented. Those papers covered the Monbusho supported coal research programs in Japan, Progresses in the researches on pyrolysis, supercritical fluid extraction and desulphurization which were performed under this research program, and the introduction of coal gasification projects in the both countrie

s. A meeting was also held to discuss the outcome and the future of this joint program. The Canadian side was eager to continue some joint program to further cooperations. The Japanese side agreed to the Canadian proposal, and is now preparing to apply the Monbusho for the grant of 1992 fiscal year.
After attending the symposium Japanese participants visited the Alberta Research Council (ARC), Luscar Sterco Ltd., University of Waterloo, and CANMET. At ARC and CANMET coal seminars were held, in which both Japanese and Canadian participants made 2 to 3 presentations. Tours to research facilities followed the seminars. At Luscar Sterco Ltd. We had the opportunity to see two open-cut pits of the Coal Valley mine. A large part of the coals produced here are exported to Japan for metallurgical use.
The visit was fruiteful to assess the results of the joint program, and to foster future cooperations. Thus we could successfully finish the 4-year research program. The results were summarized in a report, and were distributed to all the participants, related coal researchers, and the governments.
Canada is now making efforts of great deal for establishing the so-called Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power generation system. Further cooperations are requested from both countries on the development of coal conversion technologies from both fundamental and practical view points.
