Research Abstract |
Associate professor Moriyasu had completed the task of compiling opinions concerning principal Uyghur words and phrase after studying all published articles pertaining Uyghur contract documents. Meanwhile, Professor Oda has filed the 120 old Uyghur documents analyzed in late Professor Nobuo Yamada's "The Collective Study of Uyghur Contracts" and completed a vocabulary index along with various other indexes. Moriyasu, Oda and associate professor Umemura utilized these indexes and re-examined the documents according to photographs. The result was compiled and filed with a computer system. This process enabled us decipher numerous documents for the first time. Furthermore, once again with great emphasis on Professor Yamada's previous analysis, we classified and arranged all documents. In September 1990, both Moriyasu and Umemura visited archives in London, Berlin and Leningrad to examine the original manuscripts excavated at Turfan. During this period we consulted our co-researcher Dr. P.

Zieme of Berlin Academy of Science and thoroughly discussed the materials. Our biggest yield was analyzing the previously unknown documents of contract of house sale. Furthermore, at Berlin and Leningrad we were able to study the original documents and successfully gathered necessary paleographic information. As a result we were able to find clues to classify fragments of contract documents. After Moriyasu and Umemura returned, we discussed the gathered materials and revised the computerized data and also filed the new documents. The final vocabulary index was based on this process. But presently, in order to provide a complete Romanized transliteration text, we need to re-examine the materials. At a later date, we well invite Dr. Zieme to discuss the resding text. At this stage each one of us will present a translated version of the text, philological interpretation, and historicial interpretation, which will be conferred to prepare the final draft prior to publication. Initially "The Collective Study of Uyghur Contract" was to be published as a volume to Turkische Turfan-Texte Series. The completion of this work will be an asset to the academic environment which is our obligation to the researchers world-wide. Less
