Definition and Arrangement of Linguistic Terms
The aim of this investigation is to decide the appropriate Japanese equivalent for each linguistic English term by defining its meaning, because in these fifty years linguistics has taken a remarkable development and produced a lot of technical terms, which have been increasing.
(1) Each investigator as a leader of his group has collected necessary terms of his allotted field, trying to gather as many Japanese equivalents for each English term as possible.
(2) We have made deliberate efforts to decide a suitable Japanese word for each English term on the base of its content.
(3) These words have been collected into 'The First Tentative Edition of Linguistic Terminology'.
(4) Extracting some issues from this book we have proposed the authorities of the English Linguistic Society of Japan to examine them.
(5) We have carried on two negotiations with them, adjusting the differences of opinion. At last an agreement was reached between the two, and its result has been realized as 'The Definitive Edition of Linguistic Terminology', in which every linguistic Japanese term is decided.
(6) The names of linguistic families remain unsolved, because a sufficient investigation into them has not been conducted.
We have been able to make the best possible use of the equipped books as reference ones, and the word processor has proved to be fully efficient to arrange, revise and press the terminology.
