Research Abstract |
After the discover of high T_c oxide superconductors, there are many research and developments of superconductivity applications such as superconducting generators, superconducting magnetic energy storages (SMES), superconducting devices for magnetic fusion, superconducting levitated linear motor cars, and so on. For the practical application of superconductors in such devices, it is very important to develop advanced superconductors with not only higher transition temperature (T_c), critical field (H_<c2>) and critical current densities, with but also high stability, low AC losses and high mechanical properties including good stress effect. Up to now, only a few materials such as NbTi and Nb_3Sn have been developed as practical superconductors. On the other hand, many emerging materials such as Ti alloyed Nb_3Sn, Nb_3Al, PbMO_6S_8 and also high T_c oxide superconductors are extensively studied for the practical application in near future. The purpose of this research project is to organize the experts of researchers on superconductors development and to study and develop the data base on the emerging superconducting materials development for the future practical application in devices and machines mentioned above. In this project in 1990 JFY, one group leaders meeting (Oct. 6, 1990, Morioka) and two symposia (Dec. 14-15, 1990, Hachinohe and Feb. 8-9, 1991, Sendai) were held. Also in 1991 JFY, they had one group leaders meeting (Jul. 6, 1991, Morioka) and two symposia (Nov. 8-9, 1991, Akita and Feb. 14-15, 1992, Sendai). Through these activities, present status and many critical issues for the future practical applications of emerging superconducting materials have been revealed.
