Research Abstract |
The priority for the study of modern India In Japan has been given to the problems of politics and economy. Recently the problems of society and religion began to attract the attention of Japanese researchers, bit the study for the untouchability and the untouchability-abolition movements is still in the germinal stage. As it is the new field or study, even the whereabouts of research materials are sometimes unknown. A lot of articles and books in this field, on the contrary, have been published in India in these days, so that it is an urgent necessity for Japanese researchers to survey these materials extensively. The first object of our research is to collect and study the basic materials concerning B. R. Ambedkar, the leader of the untouchability abolition movement, and the Neo-Buddhist movement which he inaugurated in 1956. We also widened our field of research and collected materials concerning the caste system and the untouchability. In these two years we collected about eight hun

dred volumes and we are sure to have achieved the expected results. The classified catalogue of these books is attached to the final report. We are now transiating some of the writings of B. R. Ambedkar and the translation will be published by the end of this year. The second object is to research the materials kept in the institutes and university libraries in Japan, and we visited several institutes and libraries in Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Okayama and Fukuoka. The third object is to exchange views on the matters concerned with other researchers for Indian society. For this object we have jointly studied with the members of the Society for the Study of the Untouchability (chairman, Prof. H. Katani ot Tokyo Metropolitan University and Professors T. Fitzgeraid and I. Shina of Aichigakuin University who have recently made field research in Maharashtra, India. We are now studying ibe materials collected in this two-year research project. All the materials will be loaned out to any researcher wanting to study caste system and the untouchability. Fruitful results may be undoubtedly produced in the near future. Less
