Research Abstract

The quantification of coupling of human body to power frequency electric and magnetic fields is needed to discuss not only about their biological effects, but also the electromagnetic field conditions for the animal exposure tests. This study deals with the phasor analyses of electric and magnetic fields from power lines, and the density analyses of induced currents in human body. The results obtained are as follows :
1. Induced current densities have been calculated in the spheroidal human model. It is found that the density of induced current due to electric field is several times as great as that due to magnetic field, both fields being from power lines.
2. The Poynting's vector analysis shows that the effective power density near the ground under power lines is on the order of several kw/m*m or more.
3. The human brain is shielded by the cerebrospinal liquid covering the brain when the human body is exposed to electric fields.
4. Assuming that the biological effects of electric and magnetic fields are based on induced current density, the electric field should be used in animal exposure tests. The magnetic field may act so as to change the direction of induced currents.
