Research Abstract |
With the ever increasing demand for the utilization ground with undesirable soil properties, underground space, and reclaimed land, it is challanging for the geotechnical engineers to obtain as accurate information, of subsurface soil, as possible. Keeping tills aim in mind a new neutronmoisture cone, penetrometer has been designed and developed at the Kyoto University. One of the major advantages of this type of instrument is that it eliminates the uncertainties that are associated with the boring and casing and the type of materials used in securing the bore holes. Though many problems remains to be solved such as the distortion along the shaft of the cone penetrometer and its affect on the count-rate, the extent of the affected area etc. Nontheless, it offers several advantages like portability, reproducibility, and the economics in the long run. This newly developed NM-cone has beeen successfully used at three different sites. It has been shown that the NM-cone penetrometer is a versatile instrument, which can not only measure moisture profile of the ground but also is capable of measuring cone resistance, excess pore pressure, and sleeve friction. We strongly believe that such a system will be incorporated for regular use in carrying out soil investigation.
