Research Abstract

This study investigates the effect of direct or personal experience on cognitive development in children and seeks strategies which promote a sound cognitive development. One investigation and two experiments are undergone for the purpose.
The results of the investigation and experiments indicate:
1) generally, children have strong interests in plants and animals, but, due to the fact that most of the families investigated only have goldfish in their households, children's contact with animals is limited to the degree, which is no more than taking a look occasionally or feeding the fish once in a while. Younger children and children in big cities have even less contact;
2) children's active participation in feeding as organized activities in kindergardens is found to have positive effect on their cognitive development;
3) based on the results of the pretest and post test of TV watching, TV watching is found to be an effective means for the development of cognition and knowledge about animals in children;
4) indifferent animal feeding is found to have little educational effect on children. It is suggested that feeding be taken as a learning process about animals and children be motivated to observe and contact with animals actively;
5) great difference is found in children's knowledge about animals (chicken) between pre and post personal experience. Children can reach a good understanding of the animal's movements based on the knowledge from their personal experience.
