Research Abstract |
This study aims the establishment of a universal image analysis system for astronomy. 1. The present statuses of astronomical image analysis systems were surveyed. As the result, IRAF system developed in the Kitt Peak National Observatory was estimated as the best in views of future prospect and possibility of international cooperation. 2. IRAF was installed on the workstations of the Astronomical Data Analysis Center of the National Astronomical Observatory. User environments were provided, and utilization was promoted. 3. A surface photometry software SPIRAL developed in the Kiso Observatory, University of Tokyo, was included in IRAF as a local package. Then it was made open to public for inter-national cooperation. 4. As IRAF was introduced into many astronomical institutes over Japan, the "Association of IRAF Managers" was organized, and it made effort to unify user environments, to promote utilization, and to disseminate know-how about IRAF. Later it was renamed as "Association for Astronomical Information Processing", and extended its field to general astronomical information. The meeting was held every three months. 5. The Association published "IRAF Cook-book" (versions 1 2) including the primer's manual and standard procedures for observational data produced by various instruments of observatories over Japan, and also published the "Handbook for Astronomical Database" to enhanse the data activity.
