1. Design of a simplified photoacoustic spectrometer for general purpose The light source was used a diode laser head(wavelength, 826 nm)connected directly with a photoacoustic cell. Therefore, the space of light source and cell was reduced. to one tenth. 2. Trial production of photoacoustic cell and conditions of measurement A photoacoustic cell made of brass(w 50 mm, D 60 mm, H 70 mm)was original. When the laser power was 30 mW(current, 104 mA)and the frequency was 39 or 69 Hz, photoacoustic intensity was strong and stable. 3. Application to practical samples For the determination of trace phosphate in water samples, spectrophotometric and visual methods, based 6n collecting a molybdenum bluecation surfactant precipitate on a membrane filter, were developed. Detection limits of phosphate ion were 0.2 mug and 0.05 mug, respectively. The photoacoustic intensity of the precipitate on a membrane filter was measured by the apparatus of our own making. The calibration graph was linear in the range 0.05-1.0 mug of phosphate ion. To increase the sensitivity by decrease of background in the cell, trial production of another cell with differential microphone are done actively.
