Research Abstract |
Though the nutrient cycling in the natural forest was generally stable, it would be very unstable in the area where forests were clearcut and the recovery of nutrient cycling is very important. This study were dealt with the nutrient cycling in the clearcutting area at Sanbe Forest of Shimane University. The aboveground biomass in the clearcutting area increased by sprout regeneration on the upper part of slope, and it increased by planting trees on the lower part of slope. The amount of nutrients returned by litterfall increased rapidly in the sprouting forest, but slowly in the manmade forest with the recovery of aboveground vegetation. The outflow of soil and organic matter from watershed were relatively little at six years after cutting. The amount of nutrients returned by rainfall differed greatly between the sprouting forest and man-made forest. As for the balance of input and output in forest ecosystems, the rate of outflow of water was about 75% and it was smaller than that of t

he natural forest because of the influence of clearcut. The balance of potassium was minus and that of nitrogen was plus as well as the natural forest. From these results, the increase of the aboveground biomass was large at the early stage, and the amount of nutrient returned by litterfall increased at the early stage of vegetation recovery in the sprouting forest. But the increase of nutrient returned by litterfall was slowly in the man-made forest. Therefore, it is considered that the organic matter in sail decreases temporary by the rapid decomposition and mineralization, and the outflow from the surface soil. However, the influence of clearcut would be small on the nutrient cycling because the vegetation recovered rapidly and the outflow of soil and organic matter from watershed was comparatively little in the sprouting forest. It is a problem that the flow of nutrient cycling, especially the return by litterfall, is broken away. It is important that this flow is recovered as soon as possible. Therefore, the operation of man-made forest is considered to be unprofitable concerning the nutrient cycling. Less
