| Research Abstract |
We surveyed the mental state of all the aged (65*) in Ohira town and the results were as follows.
( 1 ) first research
1.The aged 65 years and over at 62.7% had physical diseases. A hypertension was the most frequent. The cerebral apoplexy was 5.1% of all.
2.The aged who could not get up all day long was about 5% of all.
3.The aged who had psychiatric symptoms or troublesome behaviors was 23.8% of all.
4.The grade of depressive state measured by SDS was, mild 16.6%, moderate 6.3%, severe 1.7%. And older persons took higher score of SDS.
( 2 ) second research
1.The prevalence rate of major depression according to DSMIII-R was 0.9%.
2.The prevalence rate of dementia according to DSMIII-R was 6.0%.
3.The types of dementia were undifferentiated 39.1%, vascular 38.3%, SDAT21.1%, others 1.5%.
4.Forty two point eight of the vascular dementia had depression. The SDAT and the undifferentiated dementia with depression were less.
( 3 ) follow-up study
1. In 165 persons who were diagnosed as dementia or depression in 1989 survey, 66 persons (40.0%) died until follow-up study, and so we surveyed 84 persons (50.9%) except persons who were in nursing home or hospital and rejected the research.
2.In 84 persons who were followed-up , there were 55 demented persons. Seventeen persons became severely and 3 persons became mildly in comparison with the state of 3 years ago.
3.In 84 persons who were followed up, there were 36 depressed persons. The depression continued in 11 persons, and 7 persons of them were diagnosed as dysthymia.
