Research Abstract |
It has been recognized that a profittable release of fluoride ion from dental materials increased the fluoride content of tooth structure and decreased solubility of enamel and dentin. It also has been reported that plaque accumulation is inhibited on the surface of fluoride releasing dental materials. However, fluoride has been successfully incorporated into few dental restorative materials. Recently a fluoride releasing resin has thus been developed and is anticipated to be used for preventing dental caries. This resin releases fluoride constantly without the concomitant reduction in physical properties. In this research we thus studied the antiplaque ability of this resin by examining the effect of this resin on Streptococcus sobrinus and its synthesized glucosyltransferase. The eluate from this resin showed antibacterial activity and inhibited the production of glucan. However, the amount of released fluoride was not enough to exert the antienzymatic and antibacterial activity. In addition, quntitative measurement of the resin component such as resin monomer by high perforamance liquid chromatography showed that some eluted monomers significantly inhibited glucosyltransferase. The organism and glucan synthesized in situ by this bacterium, minimally adhered to the surface of fluoride releasing resin because this resin had the small critical surface tension of the solid, at which complete wetting occurs, compared to the control resin not having fluoride releasing mechanism(MF-MMA copolymer). Thus this resin discorages on adhesion of oral streptococci to it. From these results it was concluded that fluoride releasing resin will prevent dental caries by showing antilpaque activity. From a point of view of clinical application, studies will be in progress in which the fluoridation of whole human tooth structure by this resin is investigated.
