Research Abstract

We investigated Giant Rabbits as candidate of alternative animals for dogs used in animal experiments. Giant Rabbits are reared in Senpolu area of Akita prefecture for a long time. In this project, We have several following results.
1) From field investigation, we confirmed that the 60 rabbits were 6 to 8 Kg and 20 rabbits were more than 8kg in body weight. But these Giang Rabbits are reared only by several diletanntes, so these rabbits are decreasing in every years.
2) In examination of biological character, these rabbits have 1.5-2 times in body weight and organs weight as compared with normal japanese white rabbits. But in serological and biochemical analysis, blood and sera of these rabbits are not different from the value of japanese rabbits reported previouly
3) We try to rear these Giant Rabbits in our laboratory. We get some knowledge, that is available beagle dog cage as housinng and rabbit's pelleted food as feed. But, from the results of growth experiment, we desire the development of cage and food for Giant Rabbit.
4) Most of these Giant Rabbit have been infected with Bordetella Bronchiseptica and Pasteurella multocida. In future, these Giant Rabbits used as experimental animals will be required bacteriological control.
5) In several surgical experiment, some Giant Rabitts were used in stead of dogs. From those results, it is certified that this Giant Rabbit is available as a alternative animal in a part of surgical experiments previously used dogs.
