Research Abstract |
The maximum stable angle of slope of dry granular materials, alpha_c, is thought to be equal to their angle of shearing resistance, phi. No explicit explanation, however, has been provided, on a physical basis, to the alpha_c - phi relationship. The present study tackled this issue by using aluminum rods through tilting experiments and direct shear tests. Test results show that alpha_c is controlled by rolling of individual particles, and its controlling mechanism is essentially different from that Of phi.
