Research Abstract |
The migration and process orientation of CNS and PNS neurons on aligned neurite bundles were investigated in the following three culture systems. 1. In cerebellar microexplant cultures, granule cells migrated both parallel and perpendicular to their aligned neurite bundles (Development 106, 441-447 '89 ; Dev. Brain Res. 52, 63-73'90). 2. On homotypic and heterotypic neurite bundles, neuroblasts dissociated from CNS, but not PNS, migrated and -oriented their processes both parallel and perpendicular to the neurite bundles (Development, 11 2, 581-590 '91). 3. On grating-like artificial microstructures, which were used as a physical model of the neurite bundles, the CNS neuroblasts migrated and oriented processes not only parallel but also perpendicular to the axis of the microstructure (Neurosci. Res. Supplement 16 S86 '91) Thus, CNS neuroblasts appear to have an inherent capability for migration and process growth perpendicular to aligned neurite bundles by recognition of surface microstructure.
