Research Abstract |
Kubota organized a surveying team with seven dentists and Nigerian co-workers, Prof. Hollist, Dr. Olusile, . Dr. Ajyai-Ohe and Emeritus Prof. Grillo to perform the epidemiological survey of dental diseases of Nigerian people in lie-ife and its environs. This survey has been doing at the same schools in the same place longitudinally every five-year, first in 1981, second in 1986 and third in 1991 since 1980. The results obtained through these lorigitudinal surveys were as follows ; the oral hygenic situation of Nigerian people is quite low, but is low in the caries experience and they have no malocclusion and the permanent dentition is composed of 32 teeth which showed intensive attrition. The purpose of the present investigation is to certify that how a chew affects the postnatal growth of the masticatory system through their traditional food life. Subjects and Methods The present longitudinal research was performed during the period from October 28 to November 22, in 1991. Each 60 child

ren of 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 years age, the five-year follow-up children and adults from 14 to 70 years old were examined totally 1560 (780 in rural, 780 in urban) in children and 300 rural adults. the dental caries, periodontal diseases, plaster impression of the jaws to make plaster model, biting force, attrition, X-ray image of jaw joint, dental X-ray were examined. Permission of their parent was given for X-ray examination of children below the 19 years old. The food life, weaning period and member of a family were questioned by an interview in 130 families. RESULTS OBTAINED 1) The percentage of caries experienced person did not increase in comparison with that of ten or five years ago. 2) 556 gnathostatic medels of 278 subjects were made using Alginate impression material. The models were classified by a dental age into 4 categories, lla stage (89), llla stage (44), lVa stage (57) and Va stage(88), in which the measurement of breadth between canies, length of dental arch etc. are to measure. 3) Nigerian food habit, weaning period and family composition are analyzed in the 130 families. 4) X-ray image of the jaw joint is examined as a remodeling of the joint head according to the intensive attrition of the full dentition. 5) The roentogenographic cephalogram is analyzed in comparison of the biting force. 6) The treatment need grade of periodontal diseases by CPITN and dental plaque, dental calculus and gingivitis are analyzed. The gingivitis, plaque and calculus were seen in a high frequency and it does not move to the periodontitis. The dental X-ray films of the permanent dental arch (100) showed that the alveolar bone absorption showed an tendency of increase with age, but the periodontitis was quite repressive. Less
