Research Abstract |
As a continuation of our work being carried out in Borneo, East Malysia since 1979, we have studied behavior and evolution of small animals in the humid tropical regions. Between 1989-1990, we surveyed the several regions in Sarawak in collaboration with Forest Research Section and National Park & Wildlife Section of Sarawak Forest Department. In 1991 we invited two senior researchers, Abang Abdul Hamid bin Abang Abdul Karim and David Labang belonging to the above sections of Sarawak Forest Department, and hold a meeting to revise our researches and to discuss the problems. They also visited several institutions in Kyoto and Tokyo Universities and exchanges the information about the researches. We examined the materials collected in the surveys and returned a part of specimens to the Forest Research Section of the Sarawak Forest Department. We found several undescribed species of insects and reptiles, and have already made descriptions some of them. For these descriptions we carried out the revision of several group, passalid and lucanid insects and lizards in Borneo. As for behavioral studies, we analyzed data of video, and reported behavior of several animals. First one is the behavioral study of flying lizards. Moreover, the wing morphology of flying lizards were analyzed. Second one is the study of the sidewinding locomotion in the colubrid snake, dwelling in the mountain stream. Third one is the study of a damselfly's reproductive behavior. We also studied natural histories of insects, about passalid and lucanid beetles. The frog calls, recorded in the field studies, were analyzed and reported. The data of body temperature for amphibians and reptiles have been analyzed. The materials for karyological study were processed and analyzed. Most of them were reported and some have already been published.
