Research Abstract |
This research project airs to re-examine the cultural exchange between western and eastern world before the 10th century AD. The research member were grouped into two fields. The first group did research in the Central Asia area in the USSR to examine the relation between the local culture and western culture in the pre and early historical period through the investigations of some archaeological remains and objects. The second group did research in some archaeological sites in Southern Vietnam and Southern Laos to discuss the historical process of early Indianization in Southeast Asia with corporation of Indian, Vietnamese and Lao scholaras. This was the first opportunity for Indian Archaeologists to do research in Vietnam and Laos. The Second group under the leadership of Prof. Karashima visited some archaeological remains and examined hitherto unknown inscriptions written in Sanscrit belonging to so-called 0c Eo culture. Their preliminary observations are as follows ; (1) So-called Indianized period in Southeast Asia before the 8 th century should be divided into three stages. Before the 5th century, Between the 5th and 8th century and after the 9th century. (2) Before the 5th century, Indianization in Southeast Asia was non systemized or "Indic". After the 5th century, it had flourished quite systematically and rapidly which should be concerned the political development in South Indian States. (3) The Indianization in Southeast Asia was not from a certain area and dynasty in India but from plural areas and dynasties and localized in Southeast Asia. (4) After the 6-7th century, Indian civilization in Southeast Asia developed in their local cultural base, especially in designs of Hindu Gods sculptures and Inscription languages. Less
