Research Abstract |
The spreading ridges are now recognized as an extensive province of focused mass and energy exchange that affects the entire earth. Technological progress has provided strong support for the scientific impulse to pursue investigations of the ridges. The objective of this program is to initiate cooperative researches of the geodynamics of crustal accretion in the mid-ocean ridges and back-arc basins as a joint research program among Japan and US/European countries. Although this program was approved as a one-year preliminary program, it has produced a good chance to initiate cooperative researches, and to join the international planning activities for the InterRidge program. A RIDGE workshop on observation of temporal variability of ridgecrest processes was held in November 1991 in Seattle. Dr. Kanazawa attended the workshop and discussed on future research programs and instrumental developments. Drs. T. Fujii and T. Gamo attended RIDGE Theoretical Institute held in January 1992 in Tucson, Arizona, and discussed on the observed results and theories of hydrothermal and magma chamber processes at mid-ocean ridges and back-arc basins. The Mariana Trough and Ayu Trough in the western Pacific were surveyed by several members of the research group of this program during the Hakuho-maru cruise KH-92-1. Dr. Laura Kong, NOAA in Hawaii, was invited to the Mariana Trough cruise and joined in the bathymetric and seismic survey of the ridge segmentation. The InterRidge program has been pursued as an international and interdisciplinary research initiative concerned with all aspects of midocean ridges, and is going to start at the 2nd InterRidge meeting held in March 1992 in York, UK. Drs. Tamaki and Fujimoto will attend the meeting to make a program plan. Owing to the one-year research activities under this joint program, the research group has made a ground for future integrated research programs of spreading ridges.
