Research Abstract

To find out appropriate species to be studied and how to pursue the proposed research project in cooperation with Korean institutions in successive years, a group of Japanese investigators, J. Yamada and S. Torn, visited Korea for inspection. The trip covered 10 days from February 22 to March 2, accompanied by a Korean graduate student now studying in Hokkaido University.
The main institution they stayed at was the Animal Resources Research Center (ARRC), Kon-kuk University, in Seoul, where the co-partner, Dr. Park, is working on genetics and breeding of freshwater fishes. Facilities and research instruments seemed good for performing the project pertaining to freshwater fishes, but it was felt that sampling and rearing of marine fishes need cooperation of some other institutions. The Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute locating at Ansan in the west coast near Seoul was found most appropriate for rearing of marine fishes. Sampling of mariculture fishes such as hirame (Paralichthys @. vaceus), kurosoi (Sebastes schlegeli) and others may be possible at many fish farms in the southern coast of Korea through cooperation of Fisheries University of Pusan. One of the objective species, masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou), is available at an Inland Fisheries Station belonging to the National Fisheries Research and Development Agency in Yangsan. Blood samples of hirame were collected at a fish farm and brought back to Japan for an isozyme comparison with Hokkaido populations.
Through seminars and discussions with scientists in those institutions, the visiting group was able to have concrete perspectives to conduct the proposed cooperative research, taking ARRC as the main institution, in successive years.
