Research Abstract |
This research has been conducted with special reference to 'customs and cultures in education', which is a broader framework for analyzing education in the context of culture in everyday life including common and familiar habits and customs to avoid ending up with a mere analysis of the superficial phenomena of education i.e. educational system or thoughts. The first fruit of the research is that the new frame of reference and research field i.e. 'customs and cultures in education' has been proposed and utilized in comparative study of education. The investigators have shared the belief that 'comparison' as a method of educational research should contribute to a deeper understanding of Japanese education and have presented 'comparative viewpoints' which is effective in an actual study of comparative education. This is the second product of the research. The 'comparative viewpoints' presented in the research are; school ceremonies such as entrance and leaving, educational significance of

recess in school, speaking in education, lodging system, school uniform and symbols etc.. The third fruit is that an ideal style of co-operative research involving many investigators has been successfully searched for throughout this research. The investigators have published the research journal three times and held two meetings to exchange opinions on the frame of reference and their interests and also to make public their individual research results for discussion. The publication of the journal and the face-to-face meetings have made possible literally 'co-operative research' which goes beyond a mere patchwork of individual research with a coherent entity. This research has made clear the feasibility and significance of the co-operative work for the comparative study with 'customs and cultures in education' in view, to throw an objective light on the characteristics of Japanese education. And it also suggests the importance of further development of the study from the viewpoint described above. Less
