Research Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to establish the "new LB method" by which a patterned region of functional molecules can be implemented in a lipid monolayr, to realize three-dimensional integrated molecular system by combining the pattterned monolayrs, and to finally apply the system to a electronic device.
The three "new LB methods" have been developed ; "partial-casting", "droplet-surface casting" and "adsorption LB" methods. In the partially-casting method, a outer force is applied locally onto a monolayr on water subphase in order to open a small hole, and functional molecules are injected into the hole. The outer force is a physical one such as an electric field, forces in a meniscus region or by a frame, etc. The filament of a conduting polymer LB film can be formed by using the meniscus region, which will be mentioned below. The most realistic one among partial-casting methods is the droplet-surface casting method, in which a small water droplet (several tens of mu m to 1 mm … More in diameter) is pushed out of a tapered glass pipette and functional molecules are cast on the droplet. If a substrate surface is attached onto the droplet, the spread molecules are transferred and a patterned mlecular film can be deposited on it. In the adsorption LB method, a self-organizing property due to the chemical structures and the polarity of dye molecules and an controling electric field are used for preparing molucular junctions or aggregation system in LB films..
Several applications have been found by the new LB method. One of the most prominent ones is the deposition of plural lipid molecular films by the droplet-surface casting on integrated SAW devices for realization of an highly sensitive (several ppm range) SAW multi-channel gas or odor sensors.
The filament formation of conducting polymer in a meniscus region can be done by electro polymerization of pyrrole on to an ITO coated substrate after spreading a lipid material and pyrrole on water surface. The technique might be used for wiring to molecular devices.
Furthermore, the purchased scaning-probe microscope enabled us to observe the molecular images, surface morphology and surface-potential images of the deposited molecular films. Less
