Research Abstract |
The research was conducted to investigate various aspects of modern "transportation," taken in its broadest sense; Verkehr, German equivalent of the word, meaning "traffic, contact, dealings, correspondence, circulation and intercourse," may illustarate the terminology. In the 19th and 20th centuries, representations of the means of transportation are found in almost all the literary materials. They sometimes represented modern technology, bringing new visions of the world in terms of time and space. Our research elucidated the way they affected the Weltanschauung of novelists and poets as well as common people. Progress in the means of transporation facilitated a wide and enormous circulation of books and magazines. The changes in the form of distribution exerted a profound influence on the literature itself. They created literary works which eventually evolved into a mode called post-modernist. Post-modernistic creation and appreciation resulted from new methods of circulation of literature through time and space. Contacts among people, contacts between races and their consequent understanding and misunderstanding were also investigated in the research. Literary texts testifies the ultimate possibility or impossibility of "transportation" as a human interaction, while historical documents exemplifies some interesting characteristics of vision of "the other." Linguistic research of "transportation," with an emphasis on the function of social customs, provided with a broader perspective in this research.
