| Research Abstract |
The researches on Ainu language and culture have shown much improvement, but very little about Japanese Hokkaido dialect of Ainu people. I thought that I tried to record the Japanese free talking of Ainu whohad grown up in Ainu language as a mother tongue, as much as possible, to see what kind of Japanese Hokkaido dialect they had mastered as a second language and been speaking.
I want to preserve these tapes in good condition. I will study the interference of Ainu language to their Japanese and the relation between Japanese Hokkaido dialect of Japanese speakers around them and their own Japanese language.
There are just about 10 Ainu native speakers in Hokkaido now. I thank Mr. Tatsujiro Kuzuno's help, the top level Ainu speaker born in 1910 at Shizunai in Hokkaido. I could disitalrecord his natural speeches and videotape some part of it. I could do the same about Mrs. Suteno Orita born in 1899. living in Shizunai, too. My co-researcher Mr. Yasuo Suga offered me some tapes of free speeches of Mr. Genjiro Arai (from 1900 to 1991) and Mrs. Kyoko Sugimura born in 1926, both in Asahikawa.
I have carried out researches on the dialects of Japanese in Shizunai and Asahikawa, too. I have been analyzing these materials.
I could find that the Ainu language has pretty influences over their Japanese on phonetics, but almost not on grammar and vocabulary. Their "sha, shi, shu, she, sho" sounds mix with "sa, si, su, se, so" ones. Their voiced sounds do not differ from voiceless ones, and they often confuse.
Mr. Kuzuno and Mrs. Orita hold old Japanese Hokkaido dialect. Mr. Arai and Mrs. Sugimura got Japanese Hokkaido "inland" dialect which resembles "common language".
I have not compare and contrast those Japanese Hokkaido dialect and Japanese one yet.
