Research Abstract |
1. Absorption spectra of quantum size silver iodide particles in aqueous media, varying with early-stage particle growth, could be recorded using our multichannel spectrophotometer equipped with an old one-step, two-solution mixing device. 2. With a new two-step, three-solution mixing device, stable ultrafine silver halide particles could be prepared, whose diameter was 20-30 nm for silver iodobromide and about 10 nm for pure silver iodide as determined by transmission electron microscopy. 3. Influences on particle size of varying halide composition, addition of poly(vinyl alcohol) as growth restrainer, different mixing devices and mixing modes, etc. were studied, to find conditions for preparing particles with more appropriate size distributions. 4. Suspensions of ultrafine silver halide particles thus prepared were then chemically sensitized with sulfur and gold compounds, spectrally sensitized with cyanine dyes, and their photographic properties assessed. 5. As an application to ultrahigh-density recording, holographic test plates could be prepared capable of recording more than 5000 per mm red laser beam interference fringes. 6. Spectral sensitization, coating weight, etc. were further optimized to give holographic plates of higher sensitivity and maximum density.
