Research Abstract |
A methane-utilizing bacterium, Methylocystis sp. M (strain M) was isolated from soil. This strain degrades trichloroethylene(TCE). Strain M can degrade TCE at a relatively high concentration fo 35 mg/L and as well as various halogenated aliphatic compounds. Bioremediation of TCE-contaminated soil by strain M was investigated in soil microcosms, using 70 ml of serum bottles and 450-ml glass columns as the soil microcosms. Strain M was added to the microcosms filled with a TCE-contaminated soil and water mixture with TCE concentration ranging from 0.1 to 1 ppm. More than 95% of TCE of 0.1 ppm was degraded by the addition of strain M, and degradation of 1,1-, cis- and trans-dichloroethylene (DCE) was accelerated by the strain. H_2O_2 addition with strain M significantly promoted TCE degradation. Strain M proved to be very effective to cleaning up the TCE-contaminated soil.
