Research Abstract

The gormorphology and evolution of the volcanic edifices in arcs and continents have been compared on the basis of interpretation of aerial photographs and topographic maps in the scale of 1 : 50,000 or 1 : 25,000.
For this study many gemorphic maps of the volcanoes in the world have been drawn. The results are as follows :
1. The greek volcanoes in the subduction zone along the Hellenic trench are mostly complexes of small- to medium-sized andesitic to dacitic volcanoes--pyroclast is cones, lava domes without large stratovolcanoes.
2. In the Mexican Volcanic Belt various types of the volcanoes coexist as follows : basaltic scoria cones and thin lava flows, basaltic to andesitic small shield volcanoes, andesitic medium to large scale stratovolcanoes, andesitic to rhyolitic lava domes, rhyolitic caldera volcanoes.
3. The volcanoes in Luzon Island, Philippine, are mostly large stratovolcanoes like Japanes ones. But the volcanoes in Mindanao Island show various types -- small- to large-sized shield volcanoes, scoria cones, stratovolcanoes, lava domes, caldera volcanoes to be different from the ones in Japanese Islands.
4. In the central andes near the boundaries of Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentine most of the volcanoes are a pile of thick lava flows and/or lava domes of andesite to rhyolite. It suggests that the magmas have been influenced by the continental crust 70km thick.
