Research Abstract |
The epidemiology of Japanese encephalitis(JE)was studied in 1992 and 1993 from viewpoints not only of medical entomology and virology but also of agriculture, including rice cultivation and livestock breeding, and cultural anthropology in Thailand where large-scaled epidemics of JE have continued since 1969. Abundance of larval and adult mosquitoes was monitored monthly in three villages in northern Thailand in relation to rice cultivation and JE virus infection in mosquitoes and pigs, which are the main amplifying animal of JE virus. In 6 provinces selected from whole Thailand, adult mosquitoes were also monthly collected by a light trap at three pigsties. The results demonstrated that Culex tritaeniorhynchus is the most important JE vector throughout Thailand, and that the density of vector mosquitoes, therefore the epidemic of JE also, is strongly influenced by the practice of rice cultivation. By considering these results together with published statistics on annual changes in the number of human cases, the number of pigs, the area of rice fields and others in each district of Thailand, the following was pointed out : (1) the sudden increase of JE cases from 1969 onward is probably due to the expansion of rice fields by deforestation ; (2) the higher incidence of JE human cases in northern areas is ascribed to the higher density of vectors ; and (3) in view of recent change in the life style of inhabitants through rapid modernization, JE epidemic in Thailand will tend to be lowered in the future.
