Research Abstract |
This is a short report on the area studies in U.S.A. through the inspection of following institutions : (1) Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, (2) School of Advanced International Studies, the John Hopkins University, (3) Center for the Study of American South, University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill, (4) Center for Afro-American Studies, American Indian Studies Center, and Asian American Studies Center, UCLA, (5) International and Area Studies, UCB, (6)Office for International Studies and Programs, University of Wisconsin, (7) 8 Regional Institutes in Columbia University, and (8) East-West Center, Hawaii University. The characteristics of area studies in U.S.A. are observed through the inspection, which are as follows : (1) Area study is not an independent discipline in U.S.A.Although we like to establish area study as an independent discipline, this thought would not be accepted by American researchers of area studies. There is no doctor degree from area study but from particular discipline like as Economics, Politics and so on. (2) Area studies in U.S.A. are closely related in current issues of politics or economics. Area studies were originated from the basic needs of American Federal Government after the second war, and this current still now continues. And, (3) Global strategies of U.S.A. were, however, changed from dipolarization of world to multipolarization after Soviet Union was broken. Area studies follow the new strategy, and global studies are just started through the integration of area studies instead of the studies of particular areas. However, it could not say to be successful, because of keeping independence of each area study.
