Research Abstract |
Researches in this subject were performed for two years, 1992 and 1993. Cubic anvils designed in Chengdu University of Science and Technology (CUST) were applied successfully to the cubic anvil-type high pressure-high temperature apparatus designed and installed in University of Tsukuba (TU). The CUST-type anvils are effective in the mechanical stability of confining pressure (avoiding the "blowout" accident), though with a need for improvement of the design to raise the pressure efficiency a little. The pressure medium designed and produced in CUST was better than that used in TU conventionally, in showing improved stability of pressure and temperature because of having less thermal transformation undesirable. The apparatus of CUST, applied with pressure and heating power controlling units designed and supplied by TU, showed a very improved stability and reproducibility in pressures and temperatures. The CUST apparatus was manifested to be used successfully in experiments of growing seed crystals of diamond from a carbon source of graphite at a small excess pressure. This growth process requires a very stable pressure for a long growth term. Those results show improvement in experimental ability of the both universities and make one expect further development of finer experiments based on the co-operative characters of the both-type apparatuses.
