Research Abstract |
The main snow damages caused by continental snow storm in the northeast of China are the snow drift, the heavy frost and the auf-ice phenomena. Both the snow drift and heavy frost occur in Japan. However the auf-ice is a special phenomenon that occurs in the mountain areas of Heilongjiang Province, the northwest of China, where are in hard cold region, with high elevation and low temperature. In a bad hydrogeological condition of area, an under-ground water or a surface water overflows on a surface of ground or permafrost due to break of natural balance for the ground water, and is frozen from bottom to top, forming a auf-ice with 1-2 m high, and coverage of some square meters to hundred meters. In order to study on the snow damages caused by continental snow storm , glaciological and meteorological observations were carried out along road in the northwest of China, in 1992 to 1994. Two unmanned meteorological stations were instituted in Ropei and Jiayin close to the border. Glaciological studies on snow drift were carried out in the Ropei city, using a long net fence. Also, 3 shallow ice-core drillings, 30 cm in depth, to study auf-ice formation mechanism were carried out in the Jiayin city. Data processing and ice core analyses are in progress.
