Research Abstract

本研究計画は、重点領域「地球中心核」の総括班活動を目的としている.とくに,重点領域研究終了後の総まとめを企画し,さらに今後の研究の進展をはかるための方策を検討することに主眼をおいた.
重点領域研究期間の3年間に"地球中心核(Central Core of theEarth)"を3冊刊行し,多くの重要な研究成果を取り上げてきた.これら3冊は我国のみならず諸外国にも広く利用されている.しかし,これらはあくまでも重点領域研究年度末の報告集であり,いわゆる科学ジャーナルとは異なる.これらを何らかの形で個々の研究成果へと発展させるためには,ジャーナルの特集号あるいはモノグラフの刊行が必要となる.
幸いにして,重点領域研究最終年度(平成4年度)に,国際SEDI(Study of the Earth's Deep Interior)シンポジウムが我国の水沢で開催され,そのプロシーディングスがJGG(Journal of Geomagnetism and Geoelectricity)の集号として刊行されることになった.このシンポジウムには重点領域研究関係の研究者が深く関与しており,また重点領域研究の多くの成果が発表されたこともあり,重点領域研究成果の公表の絶好の機会となった.
このシンポジウムが終わった後にまとめられつつある研究成果もかなりあり,何らかのとりまとめが必要とされたので,総括班で検討した結果,モノグラフを企画することとした.本研究期間中に原稿をとりまとめ,通常のジャーナルと同様の査読を経た後,一冊のモノグラフ(約350ページ)としてまとまる見通しがついたところである.
今後の研究の発展については,地球科学のような学問では3年間で研究が終了するはずもなく,さらなる研究計画が要請されると認識された.地球中心核研究をもう一段向上させるとともに,未知の領域をも取り込んで地球深部のダイナミクスの総合的理解を目指す新しい研究計画を企画することとした.
