Research Abstract |
The object of our research is to clarify the image of Paris in French literature. A research concerning such a great city, who has continued to play an important role both in France and on various international stages, requires to take a broad view of things. Having introduced a double axis of investigation : "Paris in the imagination" and "Paris as function", we tried to extend our field of vision. For, Paris is not only a source of inspiration, but also it operates as a center of literary activities, forms a circle of creation and acceptance, where valuations of written works create booms and thus determine the tendency of literature. By the way, a thematic study without concrete analyzes of real works would be vain. Therefore, considering, on one hand, the function of Paris in a large circle of literary creation and acceptance, we realized, on the other hand, several minute examinations on principal works in different epochs, and tried to demonstrate the process of " crystallization " of its image throughout the history of French literature. It is also necessary to consider Paris not as an independent phenomenon, but in its relationship with other parts of France and Europe. We tried to find the factor with which Paris could conceive her supremacy above all the other regional cities in France, who had their own culture no less important. We carried on our study with a comparative point of view. Our report is the result of our research on the above-stated questions. We join, in a separate volume, a detailed bio-bibliographical study on Gerard de Nerval, by which we can imagine the figure of Paris in the 19th century. To make our research more fruitful, it will be necessary to project other investigations of documents of various authors who lived and wrote in Paris, and to organize some synthetic studies on these basic works.
