Research Abstract

Since 1992, we have grappled with a lot of data, abundantly accumulated, through "Survey on the A-bomb Victims". In data-processing of these materials, our work started with discovering such a framework as to reconstruct a total picture of the A-bomb experiences. Our elaborations to verify and findings are as follows.
Firstly, we prepared data-base documents of answers to open-ended questions, e.g. "The witness of Those Two Days". By analysis of these testimonies, we could reconstruct human reality of the 'hell' and 'cruel death' brought about by the A-bombs. It has been definitely shown that 'mental scars' activate and give direction to the thought-making activity of the Hibakusha.
Secondly, we devided the process of thought-systematization of the A-bomb experiences in four factors : (1) stratification of Hibakusha which was classified to measure the weight and depth of the A-bomb experince by benchmark items indicating 'mental scars', 'physical scars' and 'fears/anxiety', (2) 'loss of … More desire/will to live', (3) war responsibility of the State, (4) types of thought-making which was assorted according to 'the meaning or porpose of their life'. Through statistical examination into correlations between these decisive moments in their struggles, we realized that those with heavier and deeper A-bomb experience have more experiences of 'losing will to live', nevertheless, the more intense their experinces of 'lost will', the more likely they find the 'meaning to live' in opposing nuclear weapons.
Thirdly, we tried to seize the causes and complexity of 'misery'. This approach consists of two kind of classifications : (1) types of injuries at the bombing and (2) patterns of sufferings. The A-bomb had been a serious threat to ordinary people's life course ; schoolwork, occupation, marriage and child-rearing. 'Because the A-bomb destroyed their dream and porpose in life', they were forced to lose desire to live. To resist against that force, humans seek the recovery of their human dignity.
Through this project, we feel convinced that our methodology, 'placing the A-bomb as opposed to the human beings', have taken a new turn in the field of the statistical analysis. Less
