Research Abstract

The leaf exudate was obtained from short day-treated (flower-induced) and long day-treated tobacco plants. The former short day-treated exudate exhibited flower bud formation-stimulating activity but the latter did not. The active substance contained in the exudate from short day-treated tobacco leaves was purified through successive column chromatographies. Finally, the minor amout but very active fraction exhibiting stimulating activity at 0.0002 ppm has been obtained. The active substance thus purified is water-soluble, showing a basic property, and the molecular weight must be under 1000 from dialysis experiment technique. The cut surface of the petiolets was treated with EDTA 2Na immediately after cutting, and, the exudates then collected contained another active fraction with much higher molecular weight.
