Research Abstract |
In this study, we studied the induction ability of inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor a (TNF-a) and interleukin (IL)-6, by whole cells of some oral Bacteroides species in human peripheral blood mononuclear cell cultures. The TNF-a and IL-6 activity in culture supernatants were determined by measuring the cytotoxic activity against L929 cells and the in vitro groth of the IL-6 dependent cell line, MH60.BSF2, respectively. Blood samples were collected from five patients, who were clinically diagnosed as having severe periapical pathosis, and five adult healthy volunteers. As a result, the whole cells of Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas asaccharolytics and Prevotella melaninogenica induced TNF-a and IL-6 activities in the patient specimens of periapical pathosis.
