Research Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare two-stage implant-bone interface with that in one-stage implant. In experiment 1, twelve beagle dogs were divided into 3 groups and 24one-stage implants(12Ti6A14V(Ti), 12zirconium(Zr)) and 12 two-stage implants(6Ti, 6Zr)were inserted into the edentulous areas of each mandible. In group 1(G1), Metal superstructures were cemented on one-stage implants 1 week after insertion and implants were loaded for 3 months. In group 2(G2), no metal superstructure was cemented one-stage implants for 3 months. In group 3(G3), tow-stage implants were left for 3 months. After 3 months animals were sacrificed and undecalcified sections were prepared and examined by light microscopy. Histomorphometric analyzes were also performed. Osseointegration was generally achieved in these 3 groups of each implant. But remarkable crestal bone loss was evident in G1. Bone contact ratio(BCR)of the Ti implant in G3 was significantly higher than others. The value of BCR of the Zr in G3 was lower than others. These suggest that Zr is not suitable for two-stage implant. In experiment 2, only Ti implant used, 6 beagle dogs were divided into 3 groups that were the same as experiment 1. In G2 and G3 metal superstructure were cemented on these implants after 3 months of insertion. In each group, implants were loaded for 12 months afterwards similar procedures were done. Osseointegration was generally achieved in these 3 groups. However, bone apposition to the bottom of the threads was predominantly seen in G2 and G3. Remarkable crestal bone loss was evident in G1. Bone contact ratio of the implant in G3 was significantly higher than others. These results suggest that the difference of implant surgical procedure, two-stage and one-stage, effect osseointegration and two-stage implant may be preferable to one-stage unloaded implants regarding more bone apposition.
