Research Abstract |
On this research project, we have designed and implemented several functions to support class lesson or group studying, such as presentation of teacher's screen and reference of studnet's screen. Summary of our research results is as follows : 1. We introduced an extended link and an extended node into the traditional hypertext model to represent new functions of our system. According to this model, we develpoed communication facilities. 2. We developed file server for fast access to teaching documents by introducing WWFS and CERN httpd. This file server keeps the track of the locations of documents, and if several copys of the same documents exist, it accesses the nearest one. 3. We developed remote procedure call mechanism on the system to provide various functions as external programs. We also developed some external functions such as real-time communication function and video equipment control function. 4. We developed load balancing mechanism on remote procedure call for efficient use of the system even when congestion of the server. As the result of test use on the distributed system with two computers and two terminals, new functions were available on the prototype system. But the effect of load balancing could not be confirmed because the prototype system was too small. Further work of this research project is multimedia support such as teaching document with video and voice, and real-time presentatin/reference of screen.
