Research Abstract |
Field survey on soundscape was carried out to obtain basic information for rating acoustic environment as follows : (1) Eight areas was selected in the central Kyoto town which organize Gion Festival held in July. (2) Physical measurements were conducted using tape recorders and sound level meters in the areas. From the recordings every sound source was indentified and the percentage of its contribution to total amount acoustic power observed in the measurement site. (3) Questinaire survey was carried out asking about seasonal sounds, sounds noticing time of a day, sounds of nature, sounds of horking, sounds of festivals, sounds of religeon etc. (4) The same sort or survey was carried out in a rural area of Shiga Prefecture. The results show that the soundscape of city center is sinple and dominated by car noise in the day-time of ordinary days. During the period of Gion Festival, however, the soundscape changes into complex and gets filled by sounds of festival. The soundscape in the rural area on the other hand is hi-fi with different kind of sounds including the sounds reaching distant sources. A method for comparing different soundscapes was proposed through the analysis of the results in which correlation coefficients calculated from the data of both physical and social survey were used for comparison.
