Research Abstract |
(1) The validity and limit of the syntactic analysis of circulation network : The analysis of circulation network of pedestrian routes by the applications of space-syntax theory and theory of graphs could show some extent of its validity for the quantification and comparison of large circulation networks. As a case study, the comparative analysis between the street networks of planned towns and those of historical old towns resulted in big differences as follows ; in the former the networks were compact/highly integrated and main streets generally located in the periphery zone were segregated from the other, on the other hand, in the later main streets were integrated whereever they were located. This kind of syntax analysis, however, only stands on the assumption that any living space could be conceptualized as an abstract space from which the actual features such as functions, width, texture, furniture, etc. are eliminated. It was remained in future study how these aspects of space could effect "legibility" of the space. (2) The meaning of "legibility" and the issues of methodology : The concept of "legibility" in this study depended on so to speak "representation theory" in relatively traditional cognitive science. But the new trend of cognitive theory claims the "situated learning theory" in which any learning could be realized in connection with particular activity in particular situation. From this point of view, we have to develop new valid concept and theory of "legibility" of space. The methodology in environmental simulation study, which is inevitably in some extent abstracted from the reality, should be as well reconsidered in terms of the ecological validity of the environments.
