Research Abstract |
Liver specimens with chronic hepatitis (CH), liver cirrhosis (LC) and hepatocellular cqrcinoma (HCC) were examined immunohistochemically. For the control study, normal liver specimens were also examined. Serum intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) levels were determined by ELISA method among normal subjects, CH, LC and HCC. In normal liver, expression of ICAM-1 and intercellular adhesion molecule-2 (ICAM-2) was restricted to sinusoidal lining cells and portal vascular endothelial cells. In CH and LC, ICAM-1 and ICAM-2 were enhanced in the area of necrosis. ICAM-1 was also expressed on hepatocytes in a honeycomb patern. Follicular dendritic cells in the center of lymphoid follicles were positive for ICAM-1. These cells were in contact with lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1. In HCC, ICAM-1 and ICAM-2 were detected in carcinomatous sinusoids and carcinoma cells. The capsule and sinusoids of HCC contained lymphocytes. In contrast to controls, serum ICAM-1 levels were significantlly elevated in CH, LC and HCC.In the cases of CH, there was a significantcorrelation between the levels of ICAM-1 and ALT.The mean ICAM-1 level in HCC cases, no significant correlation was observed between ICAM-1 and tumor size or tumor markers (AFP and PIVKA-II).
