Research Abstract |
We investigated what kinds of olfactory stimuli tend to recall emotional memories to the healthy Japanese aged people. Eight typical odors were selected from the result of a questionnaire to 110 healthy aged Japanese. The odors were rose, perfume, gardenia, Indian ink, cigarette, milk, feces and orange. Each odor was artificially prepared, microcapusulated and printed on a paper card (1.6 x 2.8 inch). Breaking capsules and sniffing each card, 119 healthy Japanese aged rated the perceived intensity, pleasantness, familiarity and identifiability, and described remembrance called by each odor. The results were the followings. 1) The odor of orange or perfume tend to arouse effectively the affection of familiarity more than other odors. 2) The odor of orange, perfume, gardenia or milk was rated as more pleasant than the others. 3) The odor of orange or perfume was relatively effective in arousing memories. These results suggest that the odor of orange or perfume is effective for the well-being of the Japanese aged.
