Research Abstract |
Morphological changes of continuously stretched muscle in limblengthening were studied by histochemical methods using 14 growing rabbits. The tibialis anterior muscles were observed after 20% callus distraction of the tibia. The localization of regenerative and hypertrophic muscle fibers was studied by Acridine Orange staining in four portions (MTj., distal, central and proximal portion) of the muscle. The diameter of type 1 and Type 2 fibers in the central portion was measured by image analyzer. Our results showed that the primary site of muscle elongation was musclotendinous junction where regenerative muscle fibers were numerous. In the existing muscle fibers, Type 1 fibers showed hypertrophic change due to passive hyperstretching and Type 2 fibers showed disuse atrophy. But atrophic Type 2 fibers recovered gradually after the end of limb lengthening procedure.
