Research Abstract

Stiffness and pain in the neck and shoulder regions are recognized as one of associated symptoms in temporomandibular joint disorder. Those would suggest that a close functional relationship exists between the stomatognathic system and the muscles in the neck and shoulder region. The purpose of this study was to reveal the correlation between muscles activities in the neck and shoulder region and in the masticatory muscles. Two normal subjects were involved in this study. Three dimensional bite force and EMGs of the bilateral masseter, anterior temporalis, posterior temporalis, sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles were recorded simultaneously. The muscle activities in the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles were compared with those of masticatory muscles.
The activities was increased in the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles when the bite force direction was changed from vertical to 20 degree anteriorly. When bite force direction was changed from vertical to 20 degree … More posteriorly, the activities of the sternocleidomastoid muscles preceded that of masticatory muscles, however, the activities of the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius decreased with the bite force becoming stable. When bite force direction was changed from vertical to 20 degree left and that of right side, the activity of the sternocleidomastoid ipsilateral to bite force direction and the contralateral masseter decreased, while the activity of the contralateral sternocleidomastoid and the ipsilateral masseter increased. According to the increase of bite force magnitude from 80 N to 120 N, the activities of the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius did not increase when the bite force directed vertically, although those increased significantly in other bite force directions.
These results indicate that the close coordination exist between the neck and shoulder muscles activity and the masticatory muscle activity. It may relate to the stabilization of the head position during clenching directed antero-posteriorly and laterally. Less
