Research Abstract

This study was carried out to clarify the relationship betwwen aging and masticatory functions. Rehabilitate of oral functions in early stage in needs to reduce acceleration of aging, In addition, the key factor to prevent from aging associated with disease is probably maintennce of this function in healty and normal conditions. As an indicator to evaluate masticatory functions, muscle strength and the number of present teeth, and occlusal force, which indirectly reflects nerve system to control the masticatory functions, were focussed on in order to elucidate occlusal force of aged patients in different general conditions.
The following parameters were examined which may influence on occlusal force : number of present teeth, denture wear and assessment, food which can be chewed, oral maintenance, general ADL score, Hasegawa method to test severity of senile dementia and maximum grip strength. The examined subjects include 123 aged inpatients (group A, average 79.5), 12 aged patients, who have been confined to bed (group B, average 79.6) and have worn denture that we prepared and then followed up for 1 to 4 years, and 86 aged people on nursing homes (group C, average 78.3). The number of present teeth and maximum occlusal force were 5.3 abd 7.1 kg in group A, 3.8 and 8.0 kg in group B, and 7.2 and 8.8 kg in group C, respectively. From the results, there was no significant difference between group A and group B, while a significant difference was observed in group A and in group C (the number of present teeth : p=0.002 and maximum occlusal force : p=0.0002). In addition, as to the general ADL scores to evaluate severity of dysfunction, there was a significant difference between group A and group C (15.9 and 9.5 respectively). Thus the above suggests that occlusal force should show the severity of dysfunction, i.e., degree of aging.
