Research Abstract

We composed a methematical model of the TMJ in sagital plane for analyzing behavior of the disc in jaw movement. Bony structures and the disc are assumed as rigid bodies and their surfaces are approximated with some lines and arcs.Muscles are divided into six groups and ligaments are divided into eight springs. When an angle of the mandibular rotation is given, muscle force, ligament forces and joint reaction can be calculated. The positions of the mandible and the disc are determined in order to minimize the sum of the muscle tensions.
The result of the simulation by this model agrees with the measurement of jaw movement and the clinical observation. With this model, behavior of the disc was simulated under the various compound conditions of the TMJ and surrounding tissues.
The deformation of joint surfaces, te displacement of occlusal position, the pattern of quick movement and the slack of ligaments can cause an abnormal position of disc around the occlusal position. The compound condition which means the slack of the two parts of lateral ligament, or thinning of the posterior band of disc and deformation of joint surface, can cause an anterior disc displacement.
