Research Abstract	The author got the opportunity of making useful visits to the closed mining sites in Japan, from 1992 to 1993 by the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C). The principal places of field survey were as follows : (northeastern Japan) Yubari-shi, Mikasa-shi, Bibai-shi, Matsuo-mura, Kazuno-shi, Odate-shi, Ogachi-machi, Iwaki-shi, Hitachi-shi, and Ashio-machi. (southwestern Japan) Ikuno-cho, Niihama-shi, Besshiyama-mura, Okawa-mura, Iizuka-shi, Miyata-machi, Tagawa-shi, Kitagata-machi, Omachi-cho, Takashima-cho, Nakatsue-mura, Kushikino-shi, and Yokogawa-cho. In this paper, the author intends to discuss on the landscapes of the old mining sites, mainly from the viewpoints of the preservation of natural environment and historic mining sites, and the 'Machi-Okoshi' in other words of regional renewal.
