Research Abstract |
This project aims to collect the basic materials on the process of the social change of the African traditional urban societies. especially concerning to the process of the formation of African National Societies since 1960's. To realize this purpose. we organized a cooperative research project "The Comparative Study on the African Urbanization" from 1984 by 28 members who carried out on the research on the African Urban studies. We selected allmost of all types of African traditional urban societies, namely, that were developed before the African colonization, namely. 1 Swahili Towns in Eastern Africa (Mombasa, Zanzibar, Ujiji etc.) 2 The Towns of Arican Traditional Kingdom or Chiefdom in Eastern Africa (Kampala, Moshi etc.) 3 The Towns of African Traditional Kingdom or Chiefdom i n Western Africa (Foumban, Yaounde, Douala etc.) 4 The Towns of Arican Islamic Towns in Western Africa (Ngaoundere, Rey Bouba etc.) 5 YOruba Tarditioanal Towns in Nigeria (Lagos, Ibadan, Ayugun Etiki etc.) 6 Hausa Towns Traditional Towns in Nigeria (kano, kaduna, Zaria etc.) 7 Trading Towns of the Bend of Niger (Tombuktou, Jenne etc.) 8 Oasis Towns in Sahara (Abeche) Then, we sebt 8 researchers to carry out the comparative research aims to perform to collect such comparative materials for two years.Because of the political problems in Nigeria, we were forced to change in some parts of our research program. in consequence. we were able to collect the sufficient materials for the comparative study on the process of the social change of African urban societies, such as the that in the family history, occupational diffentiation, way of life and so on.
