| Research Abstract |
The fire of oil wells in Kuwait was occurred after the Gulf War, February, 1991. A large amount of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides was emitted into the air by burning oil wells in Kuwait. These air pollutants were transported and diffused over the Persian Gulf, so that the environmental destruction by the air pollutants was concerned.
In order to study the environmental influence from the burning oil wells, the first atmospheric observation over the Persian Gulf was carried out by our research group, August, 1991, using the oil tanker in which observation instruments were loaded and set. As the result, atmospheric concentrations of non sea salt sulfate(nns-SO_4^<2->) and nitrate(NO_3^-) which were major air pollutants were 10.5 mug/m^3 and 3.7 mug/m^3, respectively, over the Persian Gulf. These concentrations were very high compared to other marine atmosphere and were equal to those in the urban atmosphere. Because a large amount of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emitted by burning oil wells in Kuwait was transported and oxidized to sulfate and nitrate over the Persian Gulf. This fact showed that a strong influence to the Persian Gulf from the burning oil wells in Kuwait.
In this study, the second atmospheric observation over the Persian Gulf was carried out by using the oil tanker, March, 1994, after the fire oil wells in Kuwait was put off. It can be expected that a lot of important information of the environmental influence from the fire oil wells in Kuwait is obitained by investigating the two atmospheric observation results over the Persian Gulf.
